Frances McDormand Channels
Feminism in Her Winning Speech.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star Frances McDormand gave a powerful speech about female solidarity. The winning statement included her having all the female nominees from the Best Actress category stand up, including all the women that worked on the films from directors, producers, and songwriters, to embrace female empowerment. She ended the speech with the final two words “inclusion rider”, which left not only the audience in the auditorium thinking but the rest of the world who tuned into the show questioning the term.
An ‘inclusion rider’ is a clause that actors can insist be added to their contracts whilst working on a project. They can ask or demand 50% of diversity in the cast and crew. The term was first thought of by media researcher Stacy Smith, from The University of Southern California. She had talked about ways to show more women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities on screen. Dr. Smith was both stunned and elated that McDormand had mentioned her proposal of the ‘inclusion rider’, and now has the backing of other A-Listers such as The Room‘s star Brie Larson who tweeted, “I am committed to the inclusion rider. Who’s with me?”
