Q – You’ve had an interesting life so far, coming from a modelling background were food can be a girls worst enemy to being a nutritionist. Can you explain how this transformation happened?
— For me it was a logical journey. Modelling is a field where you come into contact with all type of ‘food issues’ and where everyone obsesses about their food intake. I love food and have always preferred to eat larger amounts of ‘healthy food’ as oppose to little bit of ‘junk’.
I was always fascinated by biochemistry and the effect of food and nutrients on the human body. I had the desire to learn more; therefore studying a degree in Nutritional Therapy was the perfect choice for me.
Q – We’ve all just come out of the eating and drinking season of Christmas and New Year. What would you recommend that we all do to get our eating habits back on track?
— I always like to give my body a break after digesting all those festive foods. Therefore, 3-5 days of a fruit and vegetable juice/smoothie fast is always a great kick-start to a healthy year. I add spirulina (or any kind of seaweed) and/or wheat grass to my juices as a source of protein to support liver detoxification.
If a juice/smoothie fast is too difficult for someone to sustain; just adding the spirulina and/or wheat grass to their morning juice will provide good quality protein and nutrients which will support the liver and immunity.
Q – What are your top 3 places for tasty and healthy recipes?
— There so many excellent healthy recipe sites out there but my current top 3 favourite sources of inspiration are:
Q – Even though breakfast should be the most important meal of the day it sometimes gets forgotten in our busy daily schedule. Can you share a quick tip on how we can all get the boost we need each morning whilst on the run?
— Good quality natural/protein bars are the answer! I love Bounce balls, NAKeD bars or Creative Nature bars. The tip here is to avoid bars with hidden sugar syrups and go for the ones with the most natural, wholesome ingredients.
Another great option is a good quality protein shake which can be mixed with blended fruits (blueberries, blackberries, bananas etc) as a source of antioxidants; or the spirulina and/or wheat grass mentioned above.
Q – As someone who loves food, where is your favourite place in the world to eat and what would you order?
— I love La Finestra restaurant in Prague. They have the highest quality meats and seafood, plus a selection of fabulous sauces to accompany. My favourite dish would be Beef fillet with Truffle sauce.
Q – I’m sure being a Nutritionist you eat fairly healthy, however we all have a dark side to those foods we simply can’t live without. What are yours?
— That would probably be a glass (or two) of chilled red Burgundy! What makes me feel better is that red wine contains Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes. This plant chemical is associated with good cardiovascular health. Obviously moderation is key!
